Kofi does the right thing

I have said some pretty horrible things about Kofi Annan in the past, but this time, the man is doing the right thing: He canceled his trip to Iran over their president’s call for the destruction of Israel.

Good.

I’m pretty sure I just spotted a pig fluttering over my neighbour’s garden; though it may just have been a firework (it’s early November, after all).

I am surprised at this, to put it mildly.

Why did it take him so long to cancel?
If I recall correctly, Annan at first refused to cancel, and then waffled.

Pardon me if I don’t feel like shaking this political animal’s hand.

Can’t we ever see a world ‘leader’ who isn’t always reactionary and makes principled decisions?

    From the article you cite:

“Annan announced Friday that it is “not an appropriate time” for him to go to Iran, citing the “ongoing controversy” over Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s remarks”

So it took him nearly two weeks to determine it’s not an appropriate time. Would it be the appropriate time if the ‘controversy’ didn’t garner quite as much media attention? Farkin’ a-hole.

And why is Ahmadinejad’s call for genocide ‘controversial’?

I’m up on the cons, but what are the pros about completing Hitler’s mission?

    Anyone?

  4. Sorry, but it matters that he canceled. Quibble about the timing all you like, but it is extremely important that he will not go to Iran.

That would have sent a message worse than Chamberlain’s “peace in our time.”

    Meryl……..
Of course it matters a great deal that Annan cancelled. I’m not disputing that.
But I’m not quibbling when I note the manner in which Annan has conducted hims affairs for the past two weeks. That means something, too. And it would be wrong not to say something about it.

Annan can’t win; I agree with Meryl that if someone’s starting to do the right thing encouragement beats the hell out of “well it’s about time and he’s still a rat-bastard”
