Gaza news roundup: Weekend edition

Remember that hole that was blasted in the wall between Egypt and Gaza? Apparently, it was planned and approved by senior Hamas terrorists, and executed by Hamas members.

The EU proves again that it is filled with absolute morons by telling Israel to release Hamas “legislators.” Here’s a hint, EUnuchs: These “legislators” have all been arrested for taking part in terrorist activities. (And by the way, thank you for arresting the freak with the red-dyed beard, who should have been arrested for that alone.)

The new European Union President said Saturday that Israel should release dozens of detained Palestinian officials and that Palestinian militants should free immediately an Israel Defense Forces soldier abducted on Sunday.

“I call on the Palestinians to immediately release the Israeli soldier they took hostage. At the same time, Israel must halt its military operations, free the Palestinian ministers and members of parliament and stop destroying civilian infrastructure in the Palestinian territories,” Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen told German newspaper Die Welt.

[…] “I am very concerned about developments in the Middle East. The only way to resolve the conflict is to return to the negotiating table,” he said.

What negotiating table? Hamas refuses to negotiate with, recognize, or have peace with Israel. And they’ve been saying it ever since they won the elections. What drugs is this guy on?

And by the way, notice the moral equivalency of the EU, which thinks that terrorists, because they are legislators, should be considered the equals of a kidnapped soldier in negotiations.

Speaking of arresting terrorists, Israel’s Attorney General says there’s no way the Hamas arrests will be used as a bargaining chip for Cpl. Shalit’s release. They’re

Meantime, the terrorists are demanding the release of 1,000 prisoners and an end to the Gaza operation—and did not specify that in return, Cpl. Shalit would be released. Unsurprisingly, Israel said no.

Here’s how Hamas teaches the media to spin its statements. I think it’s the same method that snake-oil salesmen use:

A statement released overnight Friday by the three groups did not say explicitly that the soldier would be freed should their demands be met. But a spokesman for the military wing of the governing Hamas party, one of the three factions involved in the kidnapping, said the demands specified in the statement were in fact conditions for releasing Shalit.

You see? They don’t say it, but then they tell people that it is “implicit” in the agreement. Sound familiar? It should. The media buy it lock, stock, and AK-47 barrel.

The terrorists say Cpl. Shalit is still alive. I hope it’s true, but I would point out that terrorists have murdered captives before, and lied about it. I withhold judgment until we see proof that does not come from a palestinian spokesliar.

And oh yeah—Bush gets it.

U.S. President George W. Bush said on Saturday that freeing abducted Israel Defense Forces soldier Corporal Gilad Shalit was “key” to ending the crisis in Gaza, the White House said.

That’s probably it for me until later. I have a Jeep hardtop to switch out so I can ride topless for the rest of the summer.

  1. Hugh says:

Meryl, I assume its the Jeep that will be riding around topless all summer.

  2. Harry says:

    “Implicit”
This recalls to mind the words of that great American philospher, Samuel Meyer, of Metro-Goldwin-Mayer
“An oral contract isn’t worth the paper it’s written on.”

  3. Well, Hugh, I’m really not into getting arrested on a regular basis, so yeah, it’s the Jeep.

It is currently sitting topless in my best friend’s driveway. We’re thinking of taking a spin after dinner. But I dunno, this glass of wine I’m holding may preclude driving for a while.
