At least, that’s what one out of three Ukrainians said in a poll.
I guess it’s a good thing for them that most Ukrainian Jews were murdered in the Holocaust, hm?
One in three Ukrainians do not want Jews to be citizens of their country, a survey found.
Conducted by the Kiev International Institute of Sociology, the survey found that 36 percent of respondents do not want to see Jews as citizens of Ukraine, compared to 26 percent in a similar survey conducted in 1994.
Researchers also found that anti-Semitic attitudes were especially widespread among younger respondents.
The survey of 2,000 respondents in 24 regions of Ukraine was conducted Oct. 13-24 and had a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
And to think, just last week, a former reader here insisted I was dead wrong about worldwide anti-Semitism being both widespread and on the rise.
Uh-huh. Because it’s so normal to say that you don’t want Jews living in your country in response to a poll question.
Here in Canada, I consider myself a Canadian citizen, as did my parents. As for the Ukraine and Poland, that’s where they came from, not their citizenship. Ukranian and Polish emmigrants to Canada have left that kind of baggage behind when they arrived here.
I am thankful that my great-grandfather had the good sense to take his family and leave the Ukraine in 1914.
What a coincedence, 100% of the Jews I know do not want to be citizens of the Ukraine. Go figure.
When I was teenager, my friends and I used to occasionally go to a Ukrainian restaraunt in New York for pierogies and blintzes, etc. My one friend would make a joke a that we were eating from the hands of those who killed us. It doesn’t seem like a such a funny joke today.
Still can’t get too down about the situation. It’s not like its been any different for a 1000 years there and thankfully I live a long way away from the Ukraine.
I somehow doubt this number would be significantly lower anywhere else. (And much higher in some countries.) But then, I am a pessimist.
