From a great website that Sarah recommended to me:
If people you respect all tell you the same fantastically detailed, supposedly true story — and point you to lots of supposed evidence — you have a choice.
You can
(A) go see for yourself, and then maybe argue about the details, or
(B) just argue about the details. If A is how you live your life,
we suggest you celebrate today as “Darwin Day“.If B is how you live your life,
we suggest you celebrate today as “Academic Freedom Day.”
I choose A.
Isn’t it ironic how the “Academic Freedom Day” people invoke the principle of examining both sides of an issue when, as far as they are concerned, the issue has already been decided?
So are Arc B folks arguing on which batch of primordial goo they’re related to?
I forget, how does “The Origin of the Species” say life began?
Actually, defining the day as “Darwin Day” means that the choice is
C. Pretend to have considered both sides of the argument, but agree with the author of the article, no matter what.
It also means refusing to accept Darwin’s actual beliefs as valid.
