Israel thinks she can get the UN Security Council to condemn today’s suicide bombing.

WASHINGTON – Israel turned to the United Nations Security Council Monday demanding the world body condemn the suicide bombing attack in Tel Aviv that killed nine people.

The Council was already set to convene Monday to discuss Palestinian demands that Israel be condemned for military actions in Gaza two weeks ago, and Israel is hoping to turn the tables by using the opportunity to pass a decision condemning the Palestinians.

Under instructions from Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, Israel’s U.N. Ambassador Dan Gillerman asked the Security Council to condemn the attack. Israel also turned to the United States and to European members of the Security Council, including France, Britain and Denmark, and in the evening hours an informal meeting was held at the American embassy to pen a draft resolution condemning the attack.

Prediction: If the UNSC puts out a resolution, it will condemn both the bombing and Israel’s actions in Gaza and the terrortories.[sic]

John Bolton is only one man, after all.

    Prediction: If the UNSC puts out a resolution, it will condemn both the bombing and Israel’s actions in Gaza and the terrortories.

    Of course it will, and the theme of the statement will be a call for “restraint”. As in, a diplomatic straightjacket to keep Israel from wiping out the source of the terror.

    What would be the actual, real world (as opposed to “diplomatic”) consequences of Israel leaving the UN? Or perhaps, not formally leave, but simply stop sending a delegate?

    Nobody would care. Anti-Israel resolutions would still get passed, and more than before, because there would be no Israeli ambassador to work against them.

    No nation is going to voluntarily make itself a pariah state. Leaving the UN is not an option unless there suddenly pops up an alternative international organization.

    Not a chance in hell of that happening.

    Following his comments, Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Gillerman deviated from his speech, and turned to the Palestinian representative, saying that there was one word missing from his speech – Hamas. You didn’t use that word even once, Gillerman told Mansour, adding: Come, I’ll spell it out for you how they say Hamas H-A-M-A-S. Mansour blushed and was silent.

    make staying in the UN seem worthwhile. The UN is a bad place for Israel. Being isolated outside of it is worse.
