Tomorrow is the sixth annual International Eat a Tasty Animal for PETA (EATAPETA) Day.
Tired of their offensive ad campaigns? Well, have a steak on them. Tired of the hypocrisy of an animal rights organization that has a shelter with a 97% kill rate? Eat more chicken. Don’t eat meat? Dairy products work. So do eggs. Anything that a hard-core vegan won’t eat works for EATAPETA Day.
Hey, they started it.
PETA has started yet another offensive ad campaign. This one really reaches bottom—they are using Holocaust terminology, quotes, and pictures to liken the “slaughter†of animals to the slaughter of the Jews by the Nazis.
I’ve already received a letter from a child of Holocaust survivors who is, of course, extraordinarily offended. But here’s the thing: PETA is known for this kind of outrageous publicity stunt—and that’s what it is, an outrageous publicity stunt—and while I am also offended and outraged, there is absolutely nothing we can do that will make PETA change their ad campaign. I’m sure they knew exactly what they were doing, have a plan in mind, and, if they withdraw the campaign, will do it according to their deadlines and their decisions.
So let’s make up our own outrageous publicity stunt. Let’s designate Saturday, March 15th, as International Eat an Animal for PETA Day. Everybody set the date on your calendar, and either go out and enjoy a great steak, or cook one at home. Or cook up some chicken or fish or anything else that PETA wouldn’t want you to eat.
Let’s not forget that Ingrid Newkirk’s will says she wants people to make purses out of her skin after she dies. And I can’t find an original source for this, but I would not be surprised to find that it is true: Newkirk said:
“The leather sofa and handbag are the moral equivalent of the lampshades made from the skins of people killed in the death camps.”
Yeah. That’s why we eat meat on March 15th.
Plus, it’s tasty.
Anyone in the Detroit area want to engage in carnivorous activity tomorrow. Leave a note with contact information here.
I haven’t decided if I’m going to have veal or lamb for dinner. I’ll browse the internet for pictures and see whether big-eyed little calves or cute, wooly lambs seem more lovable.
Pardon me for being dense…
Does this mean that you are not coming to F’burg tomorrow?
Yeah, I really don’t want to put another 100 miles on my car, or drive an hour there and back for dinner. Sarah and Larry G. tell me that they’re going to be available after all, so we’re going to our favorite barbecue restaurant in Small Town South of Richmond instead.
Twenty-minute drive beats hour-long drive any time.
I stopped by Exotic Meats ( http://www.exoticmeats.com/home.aspx ) in San Antonio today and picked up some wild boar bacon, a buffalo roast, and some ostrich patties. Looks like it’s going to be a beautiful day for grilling tomorrow.
I don’t know, Volcano. I certainly approve of as much meat-eating as possible tomorrow, but wild animals–they sort of expect to get killed and eaten. I think the true spirit of EATAPETA Day is expressed by “the more adorable, the more likely it should be on your menu.”
And as I’ve said elsewhere, people like Newkirk tend to have a certain constellation of political ideas, and just to show where I stand with respect to those ideas, I’m having lunch at McDonald’s.
Meryl,
Hey, I understand. I will be visiting Blue and Grey in F’burg for their St. Patrick’s day parade, at the very least.
Consider this an open invite, anytime your north or south bound, the wife and I would love to have you stop by. Were less than a mile off of the dreaded I-95.
Happy Carnivoring everyone!
Wild or domesticated, it matters not. If it has a face – or a momma – eat it!
And I agree with Alex: The cuter the animal, the better to eat on March 15. Lambies, duckies…they’re all good.
I pledge to do my part. I bought two and a quarter pounds of steak today. Together with the chicken I have, that should get me through tomorrow and part of Sunday.
“They have convinced themselves that man, the worst transgressor of all the species, is the crown of creation. All other creatures were created merely to provide him with food, pelts, to be tormented, exterminated. In relation to them, all people are Nazis; for the animals it is an eternal Treblinka.”
— Isaac Bashevis Singer
“There is only one little step from killing animals to creating gas chambers a la Hitler and concentration camps a la Stalin . . . all such deeds are done in the name of ‘social justice’. There will be no justice as long as man will stand with a knife or with a gun and destroy those who are weaker than he is.”
— Isaac Bashevis Singer
Eat an animal to show your contempt for Isaac Bashevis Singer, vegetarian and Nobel Prize winner.
And here come the PETA lies. Singer never uttered those quotes. He wrote them in a novel. His fictional character said them.
And you know, my eating meat isn’t showing contempt for Singer. It’s my choice to live as I please.
I ate meat in honor of the day, and skritched a few hard-core carnivores (with whiskers, fur and paws) for good measure. Actually, I think we should add that to IEATAPETA Day: eat meat, and skritch carnivores.
The first of the quotations above from Isaac Bashevis Singer is indeed from one of his stories. But the second one is from a foreword he wrote to “Vegetarianism: A Way of Life”, by Dudley Giehl. It seems Singer believed there was a legitimate parallel to be drawn between the way we typically treat animals raised for food and the treatment of people in concentration camps. Singer said he was a vegetarian for reasons of health — the health of the animals. He believed that compassion for the weak and vulnerable was not something that could be restricted in its application to other humans.
Drats, I missed it. Does this mean I should eat twice as much today?
