Hurricane Isabel: The scene in pictures
High bandwidth page
Willow wants to help Heidi
cook. For some reason, her offer went untaken. |
Sorena relaxes with a little
bedtime reading every night. Two nights ago, it was via flashlight. |
The dog porch, which leads into
the dog's yard, was covered with leaves. This photo barely does it
justice. It's as if someone simply dumped barrels of leaves and branches
all over the yard, driveway, and front porch. |
This is what we woke up to
the morning after Isabel. We were lucky. Not only was it a small tree,
but as you can see, we didn't have to cut it to clear the street. |
Sorena sits on the trunk of the
oak that fell. The view from the back windows has changed irrevocably,
and none of us is glad about it. |
This is the front view of Heidi
and G.'s old house. The yard was full of trees, but not quite like
this. The tree fell exactly across the place I used to park my Jeep.
The damage isn't very much, but there's a hell of a lot of tree to
cut out of the front yard. |
A typical scene yesterday
and today: Dad's cutting the tree apart, and the family's helping
cart the pieces away. This one took a bit of the fence down with it. |
Another typical scene is seeing
large branches hanging by bits of wood. They're still quite dangerous
and need to be removed. |
This is right around the corner,
but not as bad as it looks. Many people got off with fairly light
damage, which is amazing, considering how saturated the soil is. |
These folks were the worst off
in the area. The trees went through their roof and the winds destroyed
their home. Their child got out safely, thankfully. |
I went home in the afternoon
to see how my apartment was. This was repeated throughout the drive
home. |
I'm pretty sure I drove under these
trees, but not certain. Probably blocked it from my mind afterwards. |
The tree wanted one lane
of the road, and we all decided to let the tree have it. Yes, I really
did drive past this one. |
No, I didn't drive down this
road. It was perpendicular to the scene at left, and while I was there,
I snapped a picture. |
All the traffic lights
were out, so all the cops were out, too. They did a great job directing
traffic, and as this is Virginia, you didn't hear a single horn being
blown. Sometimes, that's rough on a former New Jerseyan. |
